Objective: To characterize the quality of sleep and excessive daytime sleepiness in two student groups of different academic programs of the University of Quindío in the second half of the year 2019. Materials and methods: It is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The population in which the
study was conducted were 182 students of the Universidad del Quindío belonging to the second and sixth semesters of the Civil Engineering (48), Social Work (64) and Medicine (70) programs during the second half of the year 2019, which met the following inclusion criteria: Being students enrolled at the Universidad del Quindío, belonging to the aforementioned programs and absence of psychiatric disorders or diagnoses of any sleep disorder before entering the University; signature of informed consent. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESE) and the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used as instruments. Results: The study was conducted with 112 women equivalent to 61.5% of the total students evaluated and 70 men with 38.5%. With an average age in women of 20 years and in men of 21 years. In general, it was evidenced that of the students who participated in the research, 69.78% of the students were characterized as deserving of medical attention and treatment, that is, they have serious effects on their quality of sleep where the most affected components were the subjective quality of sleep and daytime dysfunction and that only 8.24% of them had severe daytime excessive sleepiness, the other 48.35% had mild to moderate drowsiness.
Conclusions: The study shows that the highest percentage of university population presents problems in sleep quality and mild excessive daytime sleepiness and that in a low percentage these alterations are severe, requiring medical attention and management. It is then recommended to implement education strategies and programs based on sleep hygiene measures that allow a better quality and efficiency of this.
