The impact of intercultural exchange in foreign language learning: a case study in the modern languages program at a University of Quindio

In this project are contained some important aspects that were studied in order to evaluate the different perspectives of concepts such as culture, language, intercultural competence and bilingualism. They were analyzed thanks to the contributions of recognized authors. Those approaches are fundamental in the study because they allow to go beyond and understand why they have to be involved at the time of learning a second language. The objective of this research is to identify how eight students perceive the implementation of culture in a foreign language learning process. In this respect, it was analyzed how the influence of an intercultural exchange is in the second language learners. Also, it was studied the linguistic and cultural impact on those students who have traveled abroad and to compared with those who had not. On the other hand, another factor that was taken into account in this project was to examine the role of the institution as a resource or a support to those students who want to have an intercultural experience.

Influence of morphosyntax teaching on reading and writing skills in students of fourth semester from the University of Quindío

Language has been essential for humans due to the necessity of communication; for that reason, different communities created their own languages and these languages have evolved over time, as well as humans have evolved. Thus, due to this evolution we can find English as the universal language for education, technology, business and industry. In addition, English is increasingly important in Hispanic countries like Colombia, for that reason it has become part of the national education policies. However, in Colombia learning a second language like English can be a headache for most of the students because they are not familiar with the phonetics, structures and functions that are used in this language. According to some experts, Reading and Writing is a complex skill to develop for students because its structure is different from Spanish due to the fact that the first is a Germanic language while the second is a romance language. Nevertheless, the learning of a branch of linguistics such as morphosyntax could influence on Reading and Writing skills because it focuses its study on the internal structure of language, especially the writing part. Thus, in this way students who learn about this branch of linguistics could understand a language like English in a better way.

The development of oral production through games with fourth graders at a private school in Armenia

The present research is focus on one of the fundamental tools for professors at the moment of teaching English as a second language, which is the use of games. The problem that was identified was the lack of participation from students at the moment of speaking in the second language. That is why the main objective of this action research is the improvement of the oral skill through the use of different games. The population were two students ranging in age of 14 to 17 of a public school. The instruments for the data collection were interviews at the beginning and at the end of the intervention, pedagogical interventions, observations and field notes. The analysis of data showed good results during the implementation of the research. There was evidence the improvement in the students not just in the speaking skill but also in the increasing of vocabulary. Furthermore, it was made a review of different studies related to the use of games in different context, International, national and local. In this sense, the conclusion was that the use of different games definitely creates a good atmosphere in order to improve the oral skill

La siguiente investigación busca indagar acerca de la presencia e incidencia de las transferencias lingüísticas en la expresión escrita de la L2 a la L1 en el grado 11 de la Institución Educativa Maria Goretti de Montenegro, Quindío. Esta investigación tiene como objetivo describir si se presentan transferencias durante el desarrollo de los procesos de investigación y observación realizados con los estudiantes, analizar las causas de la aparición de los casos de transferencia que se encuentren y sus posibles efectos en el desarrollo lingüístico y de aprendizaje. A través de este proceso investigativo se busca aportar argumentos significativos en el tema de las transferencias lingüísticas en una segunda lengua a la lengua materna con el propósito de establecer criterios que permitan mejorar las estrategias pedagógicas de enseñanza en una segunda lengua.

Increasing students’ oral production through meaningful learning: a pedagogical proposal with a second semester of a university from the modern languages program.

This research focuses on the development of oral production through meaningful learning, which is based on authors like Ausubel, Novak, and Hanesian (1978) who designed the "theory of meaningful learning", the first systematic model of cognitive learning. First of all, meaningful learning can be defined as the connection between new information to previous knowledge, that is to say, the lived experiences that the student relates to the new concepts to facilitate their understanding and application. Such is the case of Fink (2013) who developed a meaningful learning taxonomy that offers teachers specific learning objectives that go beyond comprehension. In the practice of teaching, significant learning manifests different ways taking into account the context of the student and the experiences that each learner relates to in their learning process. For this reason, it is essential to use methods applicable to oral production of students because there are cases in which they show a poor oral fluency in classroom activities, such as simple communication exercises between classmates. In fact, strengthening the oral ability it is considered as one of the most important communicative skills since students need to produce the target language, and more if they can do it by listening to each other, without neglecting reading, writing, and listening during the acquisition process.

Teaching pronunciation through the use of web tools and applications as a motivational agent to improve the oral competence of 7th graders in a public school in Armenia Quindío

Currently, globalization plays a fundamental basis in the economic, political and social development of a country. That is how, the interest of establishing English as a lingua franca has become a fundamental pillar for the governments around the world. In this sense, the Colombian Ministry of Education, in its Bilingual Program created in 2004, started the dream of developing biculturality to be able to face the new challenge of breaking the barriers of communication among speakers of different cultures. In fact, the relevance of speaking English as a second language requires the development of the communicative competences which are reading, writing, listening and speaking. When talking about the last one, pronunciation plays an important role because if it is not well approached, students can feel insecure of speaking without knowing how to pronounce a word correctly. As a result, their motivation to produce orally is negatively affected. According to Folse and Ivone (2005) (as cited in Fernandez 2008, p. 5) “some students are good at speaking in a natural way and tend to participate in all conversation exercises, while others can be quiet and reserved”. It means there is still a notable difference between the input the students receive and the output the students produce. In other words, many students are able to understand the English language, but they are still unable to speak it in the local context.

Considering the multiple advantages and benefits offered by the use of different multimedia resources in all fields including education, there is a great deal of research that demonstrates the effectiveness of information and communication technologies (ICT’S) in teaching/learning processes, despite the fact that various studies can be found that support the use of ICT’s in education, there are still many teachers who continue to use traditional methods during their lessons, wasting the advantages of these multimedia resources, just as they do not take into account the knowledge that young people have about technology, since they have grown up in a digital age in which they can interact daily with different electronic devices. This research precisely evidences the problem that entails not using dynamic strategies in the English L2 methodology focused on oral production area.

The perception that students of eighth semester have about the french class at the licenciatura en lenguas modernas con énfasis en inglés y francés from University Of Quindío and its possible implications for their professional field: a qualitative case study

The University of Quindio has a pact with the French Alliance in Armenia for the students who want to access to a course and certificate their level of competence in French. This relationship represents a great advantage for the fomentation of the language in the department, but only a few students can afford these courses. The expansion of FLE and Français langue/culture étrangère (FC/LE), especially in Colombia, opens a great working market in Europe where educational programs like Erasmus Mundus offer opportunities for foreign students having as requisite mastering French or English, though the French government offers its own programs for students but in that case the use of French is mandatory. In his study, Moreno (2007) suggests that FC/LE must be oriented not only for the perspective of a foreign language but also from the common points that both cultures, Colombian and French, have. This, according to him, would make that Colombian students see French attractive and learnable. One of the suggestions in the study was to appeal for the similarities that both languages have in terms of syntax, grammar, vocabulary, and language family. This, in his words, helps break the possible paradigms existing among the students. Publicly, the MEN has not suggested any curriculum for the teaching-learning of French ignoring the decades spent by the French government in diplomatic assistance, advisory and cultural supporting. It can be seen that English has fossilized in the governments’ agendas and that does not let them perceive that great prestige that French also counts with.

Accent as part of cultural identity: analysis of the interaction in l2 (English and French) among students and professors of 4th and 6th semester in a languages program at the university of Quindío

This qualitative research provides insight into how the mother tongue’s accent present in the L2 oral production entails the culture of the speaker and how this, in turn, is a sign of the subject’s identity. This project was carried out within a languages program at the University of Quindío. Two groups from 4th and 6th semester were observed at four different times to achieve the purpose of the study. The interviewed population consisted of four professors and twenty students who answered questions that inquired what their perceptions were concerning native-like accent and L2 accented speech. Likewise, the data analysis showed that L2 accented speech was a signature of the speaker’s identity and worldview. It also reflected that social stereotypes regarding the mother tongue’s accent in the L2 production, was seen as something undesirable and necessary to eliminate. This study concluded that although there were some subjects who considered L2 accented speech as a trait that had to be neutralized, the vast majority asserted that their mother tongue’s accent was a symbol of who they were in the world

The impact of audio visual aids in the improvement of reading comprehension on students of 10th grade

El objetivo del presente proyecto es conocer el impacto de las ayudas audio-visuales en el mejoramiento de la comprensión lectora de estudiantes de 10° grado en una institución pública en armenia Quindío. Este estudio se basó en el uso de actividades pre-lectura con materialaudiovisual como herramientas que facilitan la comprensión lectora en estudiantes. El proyecto fue realizado en 6 semanas, cuatro en la fase de intervención con las ayudas audiovisuales. Durante este tiempo se emplearon estrategias tales como diagramas cronológicos, videos, diapositivas y canciones. En cada intervención, los docentes empleaban 10 minutos para realizar la actividad pre-lectura y el resto de la clase para la lectura y examen de comprensión lectora de 10 preguntas. Además, en la primera y última semana los estudiantes presentaron un pre y posttest (PET) con el objetivo de comparar los resultados y la efectividad de la intervención. Al final los estudiantes obtuvieron mejores resultados en el post-test , lo que significa que las ayudas audiovisuales tuvieron un impacto positivo en la comprensión lectora de los estudiantes.

Improving eighth graders’ Lexical Competence by using Translation as a Teaching Technique

The birth of the Communicative Approach in 1956 and the tedious repetition that learners had to undergo with the Grammar-Translation method implied the stigmatization of the use of the first language in classroom environments. Nevertheless, nowadays, there are authors who support the first language use in foreign language lessons and propose new ways to include it in order to develop the four communicative skills. In this work, the researchers studied the impact of pedagogical translation with an 8 th grade class to develop their lexical competence in English. The perception of the students and the language interaction were established by means of data collection instruments such as interviews and observations. In addition, the strategy was adapted and integrated into a pedagogical intervention taking into account previous works like those of Leonardi (2011), Ballester & Chamorro (1991), and Koletnik (2012), and topics from the Suggested Curriculum for the English subject (2016). The results presented in the chapter of data analysis determined that Pedagogical Translation works as a tool to develop lexical knowledge causing a significant improvement, and the positive general perception shown by students displays the acceptance and the benefits of its implementation in foreign language teaching environments.

Effectiveness of the pimsleur method for the development of the audio-oral skill in french with 3rd semester students of a modern languages programme

In the domain of language teaching, several scholars and teachers discuss about which methods are useful for teaching and learning a language. In this globalized world, it has been discussed that it is necessary to change the methods that have been used for decades. In Latin America, the governments have tried to promote the English language since it has become the most important language around the world for trading and commerce. However, there are a lot of aspects that need to improve. In a report by Cronquist and Fiszbein (2017) for The InterAmerican Language which is a U.S based centre for policy analysis, it was presented how Latin America is dealing with the English language teaching. In the report, Cronquist and Fiszbein indicate that it is necessary to improve teaching training by strengthening regulations of training institutions. The language teacher needs to be well prepared to address the new challenges. He or she needs to have clear the “how to teach” and not just the language itself. The teacher needs to know and learn different types of strategies and methods in such a way that the class can be well prepared and successful at the moment of teaching a foreign language.

Didactic strategies in English language teaching: analysis of the implementation of the didactic activities related to multiple intelligences in seventh grade in a public school in Armenia, Quindío

In this research is contained are didactic strategies used to teach English to seventh graders in order to contribute in their learning process. This action research aimed to analyze how didactic strategies related with multiple intelligences benefit the process of teaching English to seventh graders at a public school in Armenia. It consists on a didactic intervention carried out during twelve sessions in which researchers taught seventh grade topics through games, art, music, teamwork activities including multiple intelligences. The most common used intelligences were interpersonal and intrapersonal, however all of them were included during the classes. Also, motivation and students’ performance was directly related with the variety of exercises presented during the lessons. Furthermore, students’ perception about English and it importance was documented.

Metacognitive awareness of reading strategies in students of fourth semester of the University of Quindío

The aim of this study is to analyze the influence of the metacognitive awareness in reading comprehension strategies of fourth semester students in a languages program. The most relevant concepts in this research are reading comprehension which is defined as one of the sources that highly contribute to the output in ESL. Furthermore, metacognition is most simply defined as thinking about thinking. In addition, the reading strategies are defined as a key tool to have a better reading comprehension. The research was applied to 10 students and a professor of the University of Quindío in the modern languages program which had to make a reading comprehension test and the MARSI test. Besides, 5 of the 10 students were interviewed in order to obtain some specific information. The results showed that the metacognitive awareness enhances students’ performance when using reading strategies. Also, vocabulary is the most common problem when students read. Besides, students of the languages program improved reading through the use of the reading strategies. However, it was demonstrated that the professor has a partial knowledge of metacognition but he promotes critical thinking in students.

Oral production in language learning: an analysis of teachers’ feedback used to correct iv semester students oral mistakes

In the past years, The Modern Languages Program has researched about feedback strategies only for correcting written essays, so as to improve writing skills in the reading and writing subject. The previous research was made by Garcia and Rico (2015), and it was called Metacognition as a Way to Improve L2 Writing. This research project was worthy for the professors who are using this tool to give feedback to the students in order to make them realize about their own mistakes. On the other hand, it is important to understand that writing is not the only subject or skill the program should focus on. Oral production is a key subject for the development of a second language. Under those circumstances, as a high quality program, it needs to supply strategies to every language skill in order to fulfill students’ learning needs. In that sense, it is important to search about the different feedback strategies provided by the professors of the program in order to correct their students’ oral production.

Analyzing the contribution of the fellows’ program in the PNB of Colombia: perspectives from the different areas involved in a public school in Armenia, Quindío

Considering the importance of bilingual education in Colombia, it is very important to know how the “Fellows Program” has been perceived and the impact that it has in the EFL classrooms. Plus, it’s crucial to know the brunt that the Cultural interaction with the Fellows has in these spaces, considering that they come from different parts of the world. Also, knowing that there are not studies of how Colombian teachers perceive this program, this research aims at analyzing the reality that they are facing. In addition, the results and conclusions are hoped to be read by local education authorities, as well as the Colombian public in general. The objective of this research relies on personal and professional issues. First, referring to the personal factor, the researcher has close contact with people who are working with the program and all of these people have stated that the program has both benefits and disadvantages. In addition, knowing that the program is applied in public schools and that the government invests a great amount of resources to do so, the interest relies on knowing how the program is working. In the professional arena, this study can contribute to the state of the art in the Modern Languages Program at the University of Quindío and for future teachers since the revision made so far demonstrates that little research has been done upon this topic

Impacto de la utilización de la plataforma educaplay en la producción oral en inglés de personas con síndrome de down (discapacidad intelectual moderada): un estudio de caso

The present research entitled 'Impact of using the educaplay platform on the oral production in english of people with down syndrome (moderate intellectual disability): a case study " arises from the interest of including people with Down Syndrome in the educational context through the use of a platform called Educaplay, which is part of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), from the following question: How does the use of the Educaplay platform influence the development of oral production in English in people with Down Syndrome (moderate intellectual disability)?. This research is a qualitative case study with a descriptive design that consisted in establishing, identifying and analyzing how the Educaplay platform, which is part of ICT, can contribute to the development of oral production in English for people with Down Syndrome (moderate intellectual disability). Thus, taking into account the context in which the study was carried out, the general objective was to describe the influence that the Educaplay platform had on the development of oral production in English for people with Down Syndrome (moderate intellectual disability), in order to identify new teaching tools for this population. Among the most relevant conclusions, the effectiveness of the platform mentioned above was demonstrated due to its variety of tools, positive impact on learning and the adaptability these have on people with Down Syndrome and different educational needs

Partiendo de la necesidad de adquirir una segunda lengua, se realizará un estudio para evaluar la efectividad del uso de recursos didácticos audiovisuales en la ampliación/reforzamiento de la disponibilidad léxica de una segunda lengua; se tomará en cuenta material que estimule de forma directa los sentidos de los estudiantes, apelando a aspectos emotivos y vivenciales, ya que éstos pueden representar una integración sensorial, generando un método de aprendizaje significativo, emocional y afectivo.
